While I was at my family reunion, I was enjoying looking at the pictures of all the families and taking pictures of pictures. My cousin Margie came up to me and asked how my son, his wife, and our family were doing. I didn't even dare to tell her that we are having a hard time. I just said, "Well, as you know life doesn't always turn out the way we think it will." She agreed and told me how she and her husband's lives were changed in just one moment. I knew the story, but she had such a positive attitude as we once again went over those events that I felt I needed to share her story as well as her attitude.
Margie and Jeff were married after she had finished her bachelor's degree and he was in law school. Shortly after they were married, and she was expecting Michael, they had decided that she needed to work until the baby was about 6 months old....that was when Jeff would finish law school, and he could go into practice with his father and she would be a stay at home mom (they needed her income and benefits until then). They found what they believed to be a good ward member that occasionally babysat one or 2 children so that she could be at home with her own children.
It was Margie's last day at work when she got a phone call saying that her 6 month old baby had pulled a television on top of him and had been rushed to the hospital. (Jeff's parents are not members of the church and his mother is a pediatrician .....she said that it was highly unlikely that this 6 month old could pull a television onto himself, and the brain trauma was not consistent with that kind of injury). They still do not know what really happened, except the woman disappeared. After many surgeries, he was left unable to move, talk, or do anything for himself.
At that time, they moved back to Utah where they could get help from her family as Michael needed 24 hr. a day help, and he still does. They determined that they wanted to keep him with them, so they would not be able to have anymore children. That also meant that they would never have grandchildren. Jeff gave up his law practice to teach school and Margie took a CEO job....for a company where she could do much of her work from home.
They had Michael at the reunion with them....as they always do. He goes everywhere they go, and they still feed him and take care him in every way. I NEVER HEAR HER SAY, "WHY ME?" I HAVE NEVER HEARD HER COMPLAIN ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO CARRY ON HER LIFE AS SHE HAD PLANNED. I HAVE NEVER HEARD HER TALK ABOUT ANYTHING IN THE WAY OF COMPARING HER LIFE TO ALL OF THE REST OF US THAT HAVE NEVER HAD AS HARD A TRIAL AS SHE AND JEFF HAVE HAD FOR 25 Years and will have for the rest of their lives. I am sure it took her a while to have that kind of attitude, but I never heard any self pity from Margie or Jeff...even at first.
Like I said....I felt ashamed. We know that Ben is happy and healthy....surrounded by loved ones. He is not trapped in a body that does not work, but is doing missionary work as he did in his short life here. I am so grateful that he is doing missionary work.....even though we miss him so much and we always will!
